On November 14th the San Diego USBC conducted the Senior Open tournament and was at Bowlero Chula Vista. We had 35 entries. The qualifying round consisted of 5 games across 5 pairs of lanes. The bowling was great and very competitive. The high series was 1230 and the low was 801. Lyle Rollins had the high series. We then cut to the top 6 bowlers. They were Lyle Rollins, Tom Ordel, Mike Jackson, Gary Cruz, Bob Markiewicz, and George Maglaras. We then had a eliminator round with the lowest score dropping out. In the round of three, Lyle Rollins and Gary Cruz tied and a roll off was conducted, with Gary Cruz continuing to the final round. It was Tom Ordel and Gary Cruz in the championship round. It was a hard fought game, with it coming down to the final frames to determine the winner. Gary Cruz prevailed and was declared the Senior Open winner. The scores and pictures are here for you to see.
We want to thank everyone for participating in the tournament and to Bowlero Chula Vista and their staff for a great experience. Hope to see everyone next year.

The San Diego USBC Board met on January 30th. At this meeting some hard decisions were made.
First, because we do not know when the centers will be able to open and the time it takes to set up the Championship Tournament, we have decided to cancel them for the 20-21 season. This includes the Open, Womens and the Youth City Tournaments. When we know that the centers will open and which ones will let have a tournament, we will run a one day tournament or two. This may include the Masters/Queens, Guys and Gals, or a BVL tournament. Again, this was a difficult decision.
Next, because of the short season, we have decided to cancel the All Star and the Hall of Fame Awards for this season. We know that this is disappointing for some and for us also.
We are planning on having an Annual Meeting after the centers open so that the membership can express their concern, have elections for the board, and conduct other business that is necessary.
We hope that the centers will open soon and we can get back to some form of normal. If you have any question or concerns, please email the office, sandiegousbc@gmail.com.
Thank you for your attention, stay healthy and safe

She was with the association from the beginning and before with the San Diego WIBC and the San Diego ABC. She has done a great job for all the associations and she will be greatly missed. She is continuing as a director on the board, so she will be around.
Lynn nominated Don Way to become the new Association Manager, no other candidates were nominated and the board elected Don Way as the Association Manager. Don has been with the association since 2006 and has been a director, Vice President, and was the current President. He resigned the President position as of July 31, 2020 and will become the Association Manager on August 1, 2020. He will also continue as a director.

USBC put out a press release and has cancelled all national events until 2021. Here is the release:
USBC CANCELS REMAINING 2020 NATIONAL EVENTS, USBC COLLEGIATE SEASON POSTPONED
Aaron Smith July 15, 2020
TALKING POINTS FOR ANNOUNCEMENT
ARLINGTON, Texas - The United States Bowling Congress has canceled all remaining national events for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“These decisions are tough on everyone, but mostly our players, athletes and members," USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. "USBC's mission is to serve our bowlers, and canceling the most significant events in the sport certainly is heartbreaking for all involved. Nevertheless, USBC has a responsibility to consider the health of its members and their communities. Given the increasing spread of COVID-19 in several states, along with constantly changing guidelines and travel restrictions, we sadly do not see a responsible way to conduct national events in 2020.”
This cancellation includes the previously postponed USBC Open Championships, USBC Women's Championships, USBC Masters, USBC Senior Masters, USBC Senior Queens and Super Senior Classic.
The 2020-2021 USBC Collegiate season will be postponed until January 2021 and be conducted as a second-semester sport. The dates for the Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships will be determined at a later time, with plans to hold them in the late spring or early summer.
USA Bowling events and in-person coaching seminars for 2020 also have been postponed to 2021.
USBC previously announced the cancellation of the 2020 Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour season, with a possibility of conducting events in the fall and winter months. In light of current conditions, plans for a PWBA event in late 2020 now are indefinitely on hold.
USBC plans to resume a traditional schedule of events in January 2021, starting with USBC Team USA Trials, as conditions allow.
“While USBC national events are canceled, bowling certainly is not shut down for 2020," Murphy said. "USBC is confident competitive bowling can take place locally, and we are seeing many proprietors taking proactive steps to responsibly host leagues in accordance with local guidelines. Those steps will help leagues begin and tournaments to take place during the rest of the summer and into the fall. Our hope is that conditions improve to allow national events again in 2021.”
Teams registered for the 2020 Open and Women's Championships may request to have their payments rolled forward for the 2021 tournaments, or they can request full refunds.
Individuals who have submitted entries for any USBC short-duration event (Masters, Senior Masters, Senior Queens, Super Senior Classic) will be refunded in the upcoming weeks.
I guess we jumped the gun. Because the bowling centers have had to close again, we will also close the office.
Wednesday, July 8, will be the last day open for 3 weeks. If you have anything for the office, the mail slot is open. Please drop in there as we will be checking the mail once a week.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience, everyone stay health and safe, wear a mask and observe social distance.
Thank You and stay safe
Donald Way San Diego USBC, President

Some good news, the office will be reopening. It will be open Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8, from 9 am to 3 pm. Starting July 14, it will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm. This reduction in open times is because of Covid-19 and the fact that we are low on funds. Also, when going to the building, they are requiring you to wear your mask inside.
Everyone stay healthy and safe, wear your masks and social distance.
San Diego USBC board members, by unanimous vote, voted to postpone our 2020 Annual Meeting due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This difficult decision was made under the recommendations and guidelines of USBC.
The following procedures are set forth by USBC due to the postponement of a local/state Annual Meeting to allow the association board to continue operations.
USBC recommends following your state and local public health guidelines to determine if can hold your local or state association annual meeting later in 2020. The current local/state board can vote, by majority, to postpone the 2020 Annual Meeting. If the meeting is postponed, the only provision allowed by the board is to appoint positions to alleviate unnecessary vacancies. All amendments from 2020 would move forward to 2021 Annual Meeting for delegate/member action.
When the 2021 Annual Meeting is conducted, the 2020 Annual Meeting approvals should be the first piece of business. The delegates/members would act to approve the actions taken by the board. Then, the traditional 2021 Annual Meeting business would take place.
So, at this time all Board Members will continue in their present position. We will have the election when the 2021 Annual Meeting takes place. Also, the proposal that was scheduled for the 2020 meeting will be voted on at the 2021 meeting.
The Board Members have also voted to cancel the City Tournaments (Open and Womens) and also the Guys and Gals tournament. We are also cancelling the Installation and Awards Dinner for 2020.
The Senior Open is still scheduled for August, but the date has changed to August 23. We will make a decision on cancelation by July 15. We hope that Kearny Mesa Bowl will host the tournament.
The All Stars Awards are still going to be awarded for the 2020 year, with the scores calculated through May 15, 2020. When we get everything calculated, we will notify the winners and the membership. If you have extra scores, send them to the office email.
At this time the office is still closed and will reopen when the ‘stay at home’ order is lifted. Lynn still can be reached through the email address for questions.
Everyone be well and See you on the lanes soon.

To San Diego USBC Membership
In this important time, the San Diego USBC board has had to make some difficult decisions concerning upcoming events that have been planned. We considered all of the possiblities and on the advise of the National USBC, the CDC, and the San Diego County Health and Human Services, we are postponing the Annual Meeting and the Open/Women City Championship Tournament.
This was not an easy decision. On the Annual Meeting, we looked at the age of the members that usually attend the meeting. The members are in the range that the chance of being infected is high. We could not take the chance that anyone would be infected. Also, the county advised small meetings to have social distancing in place. This includes having 6 feet space between participants, and this is hard to accomplish. On the City Tournament, yes the amount of people in the bowling center would be less than the 250 recommended but during the squad change there could be quite a few more. Again, the chance of being infected would be high.
The following was emailed to all USBC members:
USBC COVID-19 UPDATE
The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) has postponed or suspended scheduled national events through the end of April due to concerns about COVID-19. Additionally, until further notice, USBC is suspending staff travel unless travel is deemed mission critical to the organization.
USBC recommends USBC state and local associations also postpone or suspend mass gathering events, meetings and travel in the best interest of public health. While individual state and local requirements related to mass gatherings are evolving, USBC recommends associations be proactive in considering the wellbeing of their members.
USBC has developed a Frequently Asked Questions guide to assist our associations, leagues and tournaments with rules and procedures related to postponing or canceling events.
USBC staff is available to answer any specific questions or concerns.
The San Diego USBC Board would like to thank everyone for their understanding. We are currently in talks with the venues to set up dates for the rescheduled events. As soon as we can lock down the dates we will let everyone know.
Sincerely
Donald Way

At the Banner Tournament on Saturday, October 12, it was our great pleasure to present the USBC Eagle Award to a youth bowler. Katelyn Abigania received the Eagle for finishing first place in the USBC Championship Tournament singles tournament with a scratch score of 670. In the doubles event Katelyn paired up with Avery Domaguin to finish first with a scratch score of 1102. Congratulations.
On Sunday, August 18th, the SDUSBC Senior Open was conducted. We had 41 entries. They bowled 5 games of qualifying and then the top 6 went to an elimination round. During qualifying John Powanda bowled a 300 game. The 6 finalists were Randy Boeldt, Ken Meryman, Barry McGown, Lyle Rollins, Steve Potocny and top seed, John Powanda. After the first match Steve Potocny and Barry McGown were tied and had a 10th frame roll off, Steve had 3 strikes and Barry had an 8 count on the first shot. He was eliminated and finished in 6th place. Next game, Randy Boeldt was eliminated, and finished in 5th place. Lyle Rollins was the next to go and finished 4th. John Powanda lost the 4th game by 1 pin and finished 3rd. Ken Meryman and Steve Potocny bowled for the title and it came down to the 10th frame with Ken Meryman winning with a game of 240 to 235. Congratulations to Ken Meryman for the back to back win. We paid a 1:3 ratio and will pay to the 15th place, because 14 and 15th place tied. Congratulations to all and thank you for participating in the tournament and hope to see you next year.

Last year we hosted the inaugural SoCal Queens and Princess tournament, and thanks to our collaborative efforts we had 99 ladies compete from throughout the state, which is an amazing turnout.

The first order of business for the President Don Way, was to install Dan Starkey as Vice President and he did accept. The following directors were also installed; Gerry Sagen, Tom Ordel, Debbie Fulbright, Donna Donohue, Al Armstrong & Lynn Graves they also accepted.
President Way called Chrissy Kremers to the microphone, she was to read a proclamation for her Dad, Ron Weber, naming him Mayor for a day of National City on July 31, as he celebrated his birthday. Chrissy was just to emotional, so Don Way read for her. Ron was speechless - hard to believe.

Ernie was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. Pauline called on Lynn Graves, she called on Tom Ordel to escort Mr. Rick Stangler to the lectern. After he got over his initial shock he proceeded to come forward. Rick was also Inducted into the Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. His dedication to the Association and the B V L goes beyond the call of duty. Both gentlemen are very deserving of this award and the Association was proud to make it happen.
Ron called on Elida Calles and Megan Carpenter to present the Youth All Star Members and Bowler of the Year. The Girl's All Star Team included Megan Carpenter, Renee Gentry, Antonia Nothdurft and Ashley Wilcox. The Bowler of the Year for 2016 was Renee Gentry.
Megan Carpenter read the information on the Boy's All Star Team: Matthew Carpenter, Noah Dotterman, Carlos Perez and Justin Rico. The Bowler of the Year for 2016 was Noah Dotterman.

The Senior Men's All Star Team included Gary Burke, Don Jackson, Michael Nelson and Marc Scherlis; The Captain of the Team: Gary Burke.

Shirley was born in St. Cloud, MN., she was one of seven children having four sisters and two brothers.
Shirley began to bowl at the wee age of five (5) with her father who loved to bowl. Now we know where her passion for bowling began. In her younger days Shirley then known as S.O.S. was one terrific bowler, back when the conditions were tough and a hard rubber ball was the ball of choice. Bowling was Shirley’s life and she was very, very good at it.
Then one day she had an accident fell and broke her ankle, she was devastated, but knowing Shirley she was determined to get back to the lanes and it wasn’t long before she was back with renewed enthusiasm.
Shirley bowled in fifty (50) WIBC Championship Tournaments, five (5) USBC Championship Tournaments and thirty (30) plus State Tournaments. If there was a tournament being held you could be sure Shirley would be there to participate. She was a National member of the 700 club and a National, State and local 600 clubs member.
She served on the California Women’s Bowling State Association as a director and the local San Diego Women’s Bowling Association & USBC Association as a director. She was honored by the San Diego Women’s Bowling Association and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. She received the Connie Bechtel Award and the Southern California Hall of Fame Award. She was a permanent member of the WIBC & USBC Associations.
Shirley loved rules, bylaws and legislation, that got her interested in parliamentary law, she studied and studied, took the Parliamentary Law test and became a certified Parliamentarian. She served many organizations with her expertise as a parliamentarian.
Shirley had three (3) children 2 daughters and one son. She had 6 Grandchildren and 7 Great grand children. Her younger daughter Reen was the best bowler of the siblings, but she had to give up bowling due to a knee injury. Reen always remarked her mother would pass away with a bowling ball in her hands.
Shirley will be missed by many, and when you see the color purple think of Shirley. Her love of the game will live on forever.

MEMBER SUSPENSION CLARIFICATION:
During the discussion at the Jamboree presentation last week, the topic of suspension of a member for non-payment of honor score rings was brought up.
If a bowler shoots an honor score and indicates he/she would like to purchase an upgrade, but never pays for any of it, charges are not brought against their membership. They are eligible to receive the standard award if they then choose not to purchase the upgrade.
If a bowler shoots an honor score, indicates he/she would like to purchase an upgrade, pays the down payment, receives the ring, and then does not pay the remaining balance, then charges for membership suspension can be brought upon them. They have agreed upon a payment plan with Keepsake and have then not fulfilled their agreement based upon the contract they signed.
In regards to Keepsake contacting the bowlers for payment, our contract with them says they will call the bowler 3 times and then after the call attempts they will mail a postcard to whomever the award is to be shipped to, so either the member or the local association.

Spencer Jon Dukes, more often referred to by his middle name, is the 17-year old son of Spencer and Sarina Dukes of San Diego. Jon is currently a senior at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. Although Jon’s father has traveled at sea a great deal of the time with the United States Navy, Jon never faltered in his responsibilities to his mother; his 15-year old sister Kimberly; and to himself, to excel beyond his own pre-set boundaries. All through elementary school and high school Jon has made the Academic Honor Roll. From 2004 to present he has received numerous Honors of Excellence in Citizenship, English, Math, Music, Religion, Science, and Spanish as well as an Outstanding Achievement Award in various areas of specific english assignments and has received personally written letters from math teachers complimenting him on being such a wonderful student. At no surprise, Jon maintains a High School GPA of 4.13.
Jon is a member and attends weekly meetings of the school’s Key Club; The PAPIA (Asian Pacific Islander Association); The Science Club; and Jazz Band. He volunteers for the Key Club “Neighborhood Face-Lifts projects; PAPIA’s traditional Filipino and Samoan Dances for Community Events; The Science Club’s Special Events; and community performances by the Jazz Band. Besides being an extraordinary scholar, Jon has become a gifted musician. Since the fifth grade he remained focused on his violin skills. In seventh grade he earned Principle Second Violinist of the Middle School Orchestra and by eighth grade reached his goal as Concertmaster of the Intermediate Orchestra. Jon has participated in the local Honor Orchestra for five years and performed with them at the Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego. Jon’s goal while in high school... to become Concertmaster. All through high school he practiced day and night and it paid off, he is currently First Chair of Violins for his school’s Symphony Orchestra. In numerous competitions he has received no less than a Superior or Gold rating.
Jon bowled his first game at age seven and he knew on that first day that he wanted to pursue bowling at a higher level. He became a youth league bowler at age eight and as years went by, he began participating in more and more tournaments. He got his first taste of victory with a third place finish in a local Junior Bowler’s Tour Tournament. From that point on, he was hooked. He lived, slept, and ate bowling at that point in his life. Although Jon is primarily a self-taught bowler, he has been receiving occasional coaching the last couple of years from Barry Brown, Youth Coach at Admiral Robinson Bowling and Recreation Center. In 2007 Jon received a $400 Scholarship and a Trophy for a 1st Place finish in the 13th Junior World Team Challenge. He finished the 2008-09 season with a 204 average, an 824 high series and a 300 game. He currently carries a 196 and 220 in his two leagues and strives to protect his Title of 1st place in the Junior Masters Bowling League for the past four seasons. Jon also just shot his second 300 game on February 20. Jon has supported the SDUSBC tournament events and of recent, came away the winner of his division in their BVL Tournament finals. In all, he has built up over $3,000 in Scholarships from his tournament wins.
Not only does Jon set a wonderful example in his pursuit of being a better bowler, he has been a role model for the younger youth bowlers. He is a member of the San Diego USBC, attending the monthly meetings, and often presenting his ideas on fundraising events and how to make the Youth Bowling more fun. He authored some rule changes for the SDUSBC Youth All-Star Team; and has represented SDUSBC at our California USBC Annual Meetings. Jon is always one of those who volunteers to “go caroling” at the local V.A. Hospital at Christmas time. Not only has he volunteered to be the captain of his team in the Admiral Robinson World Team Challenge the past three years, he arrives early to league play to pass out recaps and league sheets, and he volunteers an average of 45 minutes each week coaching the younger youth bowlers during league play. Since age five. Jon has kept himself mentally and physically fit through his involvement with martial arts. He has the ranking of Third Degree Black-Belt. He serves the Martial Arts Club as Historian and has always lived by the organization’s theory of “living with morality and honor“. Adding to his versatility in accomplishments, Jon is a CPR Certified and has a California Driver’s License for over a year and proudly has a clean record of no citations or accidents.
With the continued loving support of his immediate and extended family members, Jon has his goals set on becoming a Martial Arts Instructor; maintaining the position as Concertmaster and…earning the title as a Professional Bowler. The formal presentation of awards to the wonderful “Star” will take place at our California USBC Annual Meeting, Sunday, June 13th at the Fremont Marriott-Silicon Valley in Fremont.

Olen Stutzman - 12/31/24 - 3/12/08. To know him was to love him. A true friend and dedicated member of the bowling community, local state & Nationals. Ole served on the local association since 1969 and retired at the close of SDBA, he served on every committee with diligence and pride. He served on the Hall of Fame committee, as secretary for over ten years. He was always willing to lend a hand and even get down and dirty to assist on the lane certification committee each year, and we always did that job before the sun came up. Ole went through the chairs of the SDBA and served as President in 1989-90. As President of the California State Seniors Organization, many saw the organization grow under his guidence and influence. He received many awards for his dedication to the game of bowling, the following are just a few that he received. He was inducted into the SDBA Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 1992, inducted into the State Seniors Hall of Fame in 1993, received a 25 year plaque from the ABC for attendance in the National Tournaments , in 1996 Ole received the Ray Hanley Award for dedication to the game of bowling from the Southern California Bowling Writers.
